If you sleep on a floor bed, this is one detail you don’t want to overlook

I’ve woven that experience in naturally while keeping the tone personal and concise.

Why We Switched to a Floor Bed

When Sheppard was born, we decided to ditch our bed frame and switch to a floor bed. It felt like the safest way to co-sleep, and I loved how easy it made those countless nighttime feeds.

As a new mom, I didn’t realize how quickly babies change. Newborns stay right where you put them, so it feels like you have plenty of time. Then suddenly, they’re rolling, crawling, and exploring everything. At almost 9 months old, the peace of mind that comes from sleeping so close to the floor is everything.

I already knew that placing a mattress directly on the floor—especially in a ground-level room—can increase the risk of moisture buildup, which is why we installed wooden slats from the very beginning. I felt pretty confident that would be enough.

Then I remembered a customer with a well-known organic mattress whose mattress developed mold even while sitting on a conventional bed frame. Around the same time, another family who co-sleeps on a floor bed reached out to me after discovering mold beneath theirs. That was all the reminder I needed that even high-quality, natural mattresses benefit from as much airflow as possible.

Since we sleep on a premium mattress made from natural materials with an organic cotton cover, I wanted to be extra careful. This time-lapse video shows Mateo and me (yes, that’s proper grammar!) adding a felted organic wool underlay beneath our mattress. It encourages even more airflow, naturally helps regulate moisture, and gives me so much peace of mind—even living in the high desert.

I also love the smell of untreated wool. It feels like one more simple way to bring nature into our home.

For anyone with a wool allergy or who prefers a plant-based option, I also offer natural airflow layers made from coconut coir, as well as hemp and natural latex.

Sometimes it’s the simple, preventative choices that help you sleep the best.
